Short answer: AI won't replace advisors, but it is slowing growth, and the outlook just changed sharply. In its August 2026 projections, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects personal financial advisor jobs to grow only 1% from 2025 to 2035, saying AI tools for financial advice "may moderate demand" (BLS). The previous round projected 17.1% (BLS Monthly Labor Review).

The numbers

Measure Personal financial advisors
Projected growth 2025–35 1% (+4,100 jobs)
Previous projection (2023–33) 17.1%
Openings per year ~17,100
Median pay (May 2025) $105,070
BLS AI exposure tier Very high (reported)

Sources: BLS; BLS MLR; tier as reported by AI2 Work. BLS stresses exposure "does not imply job loss" (BLS).

Why the drop? BLS still expects many consumers to rely on human advisors for complex and specialized advice. But AI tools now handle more of the simple, entry-level guidance that used to bring new clients to advisors.

What clients say

  • 75% of investors with an advisor use AI at least occasionally for financial questions, but only 3% would replace their advisor with it, and 76% would still want a human (Betterment Advisor Solutions).
  • 63% of Gen Z clients say poor technology would influence a decision to switch advisors.

What advisors are doing

  • 72% of advisors now use AI, up from 56% in 2025 (BNP Paribas Cardif).
  • Wealth firms expect to add junior advisors and client associates, using AI to expand capacity rather than cut staff (Vista Equity / Cerulli).

What AI does vs what clients pay for

AI handles Clients pay advisors for
Meeting notes and follow-ups Judgment on complex situations
Data gathering and portfolio drift checks Behavioral coaching in volatile markets
First-draft plans and research Tax, estate and family coordination
Answering basic money questions Fiduciary accountability

How to read these numbers

Two different things often get blurred together in "will AI replace" headlines. The first is exposure: how much of an occupation's day-to-day work an AI system could assist with or complete. BLS builds its exposure categories from five research sources, three that compare AI capabilities with job tasks and two based on how people actually use AI tools, and ranks every occupation against the others (BLS). The second is employment: whether there will be more or fewer financial advisors in ten years. That depends on demand for the service, the economy, regulation and how firms choose to use the time AI saves.

High exposure can mean a job changes a lot while headcount holds steady, because the freed-up time goes into work clients value more. Low exposure doesn't guarantee growth either. That's why this guide looks at both, alongside what clients and the profession itself are saying.

Skills that will matter most through 2035

  • Complex planning: tax, estate, business succession and multi-generational coordination.
  • Behavioral coaching: keeping clients invested through volatility, which no robo-tool does well.
  • Working with AI-informed clients: reviewing and correcting what clients learned from AI.
  • AI-enabled productivity: using notetakers and agents to serve more households without adding hours.
  • Compliance with AI: recordkeeping, marketing claims and vendor oversight.

What to do about it

  1. Automate the admin (AI notetakers; AI agents).
  2. Move upmarket in complexity: planning, tax and estate coordination.
  3. Meet AI-informed clients where they are: review what AI told them.
  4. Stay compliant: AI claims and records are exam topics (SEC exam priorities).
