What happened: on October 15, 2026, Microsoft made more than 20 purpose-built legal skills generally available in Microsoft Copilot. They draft from your precedents, review agreements against playbooks, and put proposed edits into Word as native tracked changes. Partner plugins from legal vendors such as Bloomberg Law, iManage, NetDocuments, Docusign, Harvey and Legora are rolling out alongside them (Microsoft).

Why it matters for small firms: most small firms already live in Word and Outlook. If you pay for Microsoft 365 Copilot, you may have contract review and drafting help without buying a separate legal AI tool. But the ethics duties don't change, and Copilot keeps records of your prompts that can turn up in discovery.

Review and negotiation Checks agreements against a playbook, flags terms, proposes edits as tracked changes Word

Matter management Builds case chronologies, surfaces key dates, turns meeting records into minutes Cowork

Cowork is Microsoft's agent workspace for multi-step tasks across emails, meetings and files. In Word, Microsoft says edits are applied only when you approve them.

The partner plugins

Microsoft listed partners in five groups (Microsoft):

  • Legal research: Bloomberg Law, Trellis, Descrybe, Legal Data Hunter, Courtroom5, Lawstronaut
  • Document and matter management: iManage Work, NetDocuments, Box, Litera, HighQ (Thomson Reuters), LegalZoom, Solve Intelligence
  • Agreements and e-signature: Docusign, Juro, Adobe Acrobat Sign, LawVu, SignatureAPI, Dropbox Sign, PandaDoc
  • Legal AI: Harvey, Legora, DeepJudge
  • E-discovery: Everlaw, Relativity

Notably absent from that list: the practice management platforms most small firms use, such as Clio and MyCase. If those are your systems of record, compare the AI built into them in Clio vs MyCase vs PracticePanther and Clio's Vincent AI.

What it costs

Microsoft's announcement doesn't list a price for the legal skills. They're delivered inside Copilot, and the Word plugin is switched on by default for commercial Microsoft 365 Copilot subscribers. In Cowork, users add the plugin themselves (ComplexDiscovery; The Legal Wire). Check Microsoft's current Copilot pricing for your plan before you assume it's included.

The evidence so far

All of the performance data comes from Microsoft. It reports more than 1,800 internal users, nearly 100,000 edits, and users keeping roughly 7 in 10 suggestions (Microsoft). There's no independent testing yet, and Microsoft didn't say how its internal quality scores were defined (ComplexDiscovery; Legal Practice Intelligence).

The records issue most firms will miss

Copilot prompts and responses are stored in a hidden folder in each user's Exchange mailbox, and compliance admins can search them with eDiscovery tools. A chat disappearing from your screen doesn't mean it's deleted, and litigation holds suspend deletion. Cowork conversations, files it creates, and scheduled prompts are all in eDiscovery scope (ComplexDiscovery).

That matters for privilege. In United States v. Heppner (S.D.N.Y., Feb. 2026), a client's own consumer-AI documents weren't privileged, partly because counsel hadn't directed the AI use (our Heppner guide). Commentators note that enterprise terms like Microsoft's haven't been tested in court yet.

What Microsoft says about your data

According to Microsoft, prompts and responses stay within the Microsoft 365 service boundary, Copilot only works with content each user can already access, sensitivity labels are honored, and your prompts and documents aren't used to train the underlying foundation models (Microsoft). Partner plugins are different: each external service enforces its own permissions and privacy terms, so vet them separately.

Checklist before you switch it on

  1. Check your license. Confirm which Microsoft 365 Copilot plan you have and whether the legal skills are active in your tenant.
  2. Set retention and holds. Make sure your retention policies cover Copilot interactions, and name Copilot activity in litigation hold notices.
  3. Approve plugins deliberately. Decide which partner plugins are allowed before lawyers start adding them in Cowork.
  4. Load your own precedents and playbooks. The review features are only as good as the standards you give them.
  5. Verify everything. Citations, clause summaries and deadlines still need a lawyer's check. AI hallucinations keep producing sanctions (our sanctions tracker).
  6. Bill honestly. Bill the time you actually spent, not the time the task used to take (ABA Formal Opinion 512).
  7. Write it into your firm policy. See our AI policy template for small law firms.

FAQ

Is Microsoft Copilot for Legal free?

Microsoft hasn't published a separate price. The legal skills are delivered inside Microsoft 365 Copilot, which is a paid add-on to a qualifying Microsoft 365 plan.

Does Microsoft train its AI on my client documents?

Microsoft says prompts, responses and documents aren't used to train the underlying foundation models. Partner plugins have their own terms, so check each one.

Can Copilot chats be discovered?

Yes. Copilot prompts and responses are stored in a hidden mailbox folder that eDiscovery tools can search, and holds suspend deletion.

Does it replace Harvey or a legal research tool?

Not necessarily. Harvey, Legora and Bloomberg Law are plugin partners, so Copilot connects to them. For case law research you still need a dedicated research source.
