What happened: on November 10, 2025, Clio completed its roughly $1 billion acquisition of vLex, the legal research company behind Vincent AI, and raised a $500 million Series G at a $5 billion valuation (ABA Journal; LawSites). The deal was announced on June 30, 2025.
Why it matters today: Clio is the practice management system for a large share of solo and small firms. Owning a legal research database and an AI layer means research, drafting and matter data can live in one place. For small firms, that changes the "Westlaw or Lexis plus a separate AI tool" decision.
The deal in numbers
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Price | ~$1 billion |
| Funding | $500M Series G led by NEA; $350M debt facility (Blackstone, Blue Owl) |
| Valuation | $5 billion |
| Clio ARR | $400 million (company-reported) |
| Reach | Hundreds of thousands of legal professionals in 130+ countries |
| vLex library | 1 billion+ documents across 110 jurisdictions |

Clio calls the combined product the Intelligent Legal Work Platform. At ClioCon in October 2025 it launched Clio Work, Vincent by Clio, Vincent Studio and Clio for Enterprise (LawSites).
How Clio's lineup fits together
| Product | Role |
|---|---|
| Clio Manage | Practice management: matters, time, billing, documents |
| Clio Grow | Client intake and CRM |
| Clio Draft | Document automation |
| Clio Work | AI workspace combining matter data with vLex's legal library |
| Vincent by Clio | AI research and analysis from vLex |
| Clio Operate | Work management for large firms and legal departments (formerly ShareDo, acquired March 2025) |

The strategic point is that Clio is moving from a system of record to what it calls a system of action: AI that works directly on your matters instead of a separate chat window. For a small firm, the practical test is whether Vincent's answers come back linked to real authorities you can open and check in one click.
What Vincent AI does
According to vLex (vLex):
- Research: natural-language questions answered with citations, 50-state surveys, and side-by-side jurisdiction comparisons
- Litigation: complaint review, pleading comparisons, and analysis of recorded court proceedings
- Transactions: contract risk analysis, redline review and version comparison
- Litigation intelligence: profiles of judges, lawyers, firms and parties from court records
- Vincent Studio: a no-code builder for firm-specific workflows
Security: vLex cites SOC 2 and ISO 27001, and "zero-retention agreements" with its AI model providers. Pricing isn't published; you book a demo or start a trial.
Should a small firm switch?

Reasons to look:
- You already run on Clio and want research grounded in a real case-law database, connected to matter data
- You need multi-jurisdiction or international research
- You want one vendor for practice management, research and drafting
Reasons to wait or compare:
- No public pricing, so compare total cost against your current research subscription
- Consolidating vendors increases lock-in
- Your current research tool may already have strong AI (CoCounsel, Lexis+ AI)
Questions to ask before you buy
- Is client data used to train models? "Zero retention" with model providers isn't the same as "never used to improve the product."
- Where is matter data processed and stored?
- How are citations grounded and linked so they're easy to verify? Courts are sanctioning fake citations (our case roundup).
- What does it cost per user, and is it bundled with a Clio tier?
- Can you export everything if you leave?

Is vLex a full replacement for Westlaw or Lexis?
For many small firms vLex's database may cover daily needs, but check coverage for your jurisdictions and practice areas before cancelling anything.

Yes. It closed in November 2025 after Spanish regulatory approval in late October.
