What happened: at Applied Net 2026 in late September 2026, Applied Systems launched Epic Conductor, an AI layer built into Applied Epic that reads carrier documents, checks policies against quotes and automates agency accounting tasks (Insurance Business, Sep 29, 2026). The same week, the Big "I" 2026 Agency Universe Study reported that 46% of independent agencies now use AI, up from 15% in 2024 (Insurance Journal, Sep 24, 2026).

Why it matters today: AI is moving from side tools, like ChatGPT for marketing copy, into the agency management system itself, where policy data, E&O exposure and money all live.

What Epic Conductor does

Area Function
Data entry Extracts data from dec pages, applications and submissions and writes it into Epic
Policy checking Side-by-side quote comparison; checks bound policies against quotes; flags coverage gaps and missing endorsements
Accounting Links invoicing, AR, trust accounting and GL close; automates direct bill, agency bill and bank reconciliation, with human review checkpoints
Commercial trading One AI workflow for new business and remarketing submissions
E&O "Every action logged automatically" for E&O purposes

Applied's claims, and the caveats

Applied's published figures include 55 minutes saved per submission, 32–60 minutes per policy check, 99% extraction accuracy across 90+ carriers and 90% fewer reconciliation hours for commission statements. Insurance Business noted that Applied hasn't said how these were measured, which agencies took part, whether "99%" is per field or per document, or whether review time is included (Insurance Business, Oct 1, 2026).

Treat the numbers as a pilot hypothesis, not a forecast.

Survey Finding
Agency Universe Study (Sep 2026, 1,376 respondents) 46% use AI; top uses are marketing content (49%), coverage form analysis (43%) and contract review (35%)
Same study Top barriers: not knowing what AI can do (60%) and security or privacy (48%)
ACT Tech Trends (Feb 2026) 31% not using AI, 33% experimenting, 22% limited use, only 8% embedded in daily workflows

Sources: Insurance Journal; Big "I" / ACT. The surveys use different samples and definitions. The gap between "using AI" and "AI in daily workflows" is where AMS-native tools like Conductor aim.

Questions to ask any AMS vendor about AI

  1. Where does extracted data go, and is it used to train models?
  2. What's logged for E&O, and can you export the logs?
  3. Who reviews AI output before it changes a policy record or a trust account?
  4. How are carrier documents handled under your carrier agreements and the NAIC bulletin's vendor expectations (our guide)?
  5. What does it cost, and is AI included or a separate add-on?

AI that talks to customers has separate rules. See our AI receptionist comparison.

FAQ

Is Epic Conductor available now?

Applied announced it in September 2026 without public rollout dates or pricing. Ask your Applied rep.

Is AI in the AMS safer than ChatGPT?

It keeps data inside your system and its security controls, which is a real advantage. You still need review steps for anything that changes coverage or money.

Should a small agency switch AMS for AI?

Rarely. Choose the AMS for workflow fit, then add AI. Most vendors are adding AI features quickly.
