1. TaxDome: best value for tax firms
Price (per seat per year, billed upfront):
- Essentials: $800 on a 1-year term, solo practitioners only
- Pro: $1,000
- Business: $1,200
- Multi-year terms are cheaper: $700, $900 and $1,100 respectively on a 3-year commitment.
Pro adds general-ledger integrations for bookkeepers, IRS transcript downloads and AI-powered reporting. Business adds Client Care, where TaxDome's support team answers your clients' platform questions. Seasonal seats cost $100 a month on Pro, or $500 for a 4-month term on Business (TaxDome pricing).
AI today: client documents are auto-tagged, categorized and renamed, which you switch on in Firm settings. Juno, TaxDome's tax-prep integration, turns client documents into a draft return your team reviews and pushes to Lacerte, ProConnect, Drake or UltraTax. TaxDome claims 99% extraction accuracy; that's a vendor figure.
Coming this fall: Atlas, an AI operations agent ("find every job stuck for more than two weeks"), plus MCP connectors for Claude and ChatGPT and a public API. TaxDome says data processed by its AI is "never stored externally, sold, or used to train public or third-party AI models," and every automated task waits for approval before anything goes out (TaxDome AI).
Watch for: the best prices need a multi-year commitment, paid upfront. Atlas isn't available yet, so judge TaxDome on what ships today.
2. Karbon: best for email-driven teams
Price: Team $59 and Business $89 per user per month billed annually, or $79 and $99 billed monthly (monthly billing only for teams of 4+). Business adds automatic client reminders, task automation and industry integrations. Enterprise is custom (Karbon pricing).
AI today, on all paid plans:
- drafting, refining and quick replies for emails
- summaries of email threads and work conversations
- one-page client summaries pulling emails, notes, work and billing
- missed time-entry flags based on completed tasks
Kai, an "AI coworker," and agentic workflows are in early access, and meeting intelligence is coming soon. Karbon says AI "is currently available to all Karbon customers at no additional cost," with advance notice if that changes. It runs on Azure OpenAI and doesn't use your firm's data to train models (Karbon AI).
Watch for: Karbon is built around a shared team inbox. If your firm lives in email, that's its biggest strength. If your clients mostly use a portal, TaxDome or Canopy may fit better.
3. Canopy: most advanced AI agent today
Price (per user per month, billed annually; annual saves 20%):
- Standard $74: CRM, documents, e-signatures, client portal, workflows and billing
- Plus $109: adds capacity planning and custom reporting
- Premium $149: advanced automation (marked coming soon)
Add-ons include Tax Workflow Automation (from $34 per client credit), Close Automation ($10 per connected client per month, first 5 included) and Tax Resolution ($50 per user per month). The AI Meeting Notetaker (beta) includes 8, 12 or 16 hours per user per month depending on plan (Canopy pricing).
Canopy Coworker, launched April 30, 2026, is an AI agent that carries out multistep work: onboarding new clients, chasing missing documents, flagging engagements where the effective hourly rate is falling, and adjusting workflows when deadlines change. It works within your firm's permissions and routes exceptions to people (CPA Practice Advisor). It's still labeled beta on the pricing page.
Watch for: Canopy is the priciest per seat, and the trial is set up through a sales demo.
Which should you choose?
| If your firm… | Choose |
|---|---|
| Is tax-focused and price-sensitive | TaxDome (consider a multi-year term) |
| Is a solo tax practice | TaxDome Essentials ($800/yr) |
| Runs on email, with bookkeeping or advisory clients | Karbon |
| Wants an AI agent doing admin work now | Canopy |
| Wants to connect Claude or ChatGPT to its practice data | TaxDome (MCP coming this fall) |
Before switching, whichever you pick:
- Ask how the AI handles client data. All three say they don't train on it, but get it in writing.
- Check your obligations under the IRS and FTC data rules for tax preparers.
- Plan the migration outside tax season.
