Short answer: Holistiplan is still the market leader for scanning client tax returns: from $749 a year for 30 households, with unlimited users and a 7-day free trial. FP Alpha is the better pick if you want tax, estate and insurance document review in one place ($1,995 a year All-In-One bundle) and its new AI chat for "what-if" tax scenarios. If you already use RightCapital for planning, its Tax Analyzer comes with the Premium plan at no separate charge.

1. Holistiplan: best tax return analysis

Price (per year, by household count):

  • Basic Tax: $749 for 30 households up to $11,049 for 750. Federal return and transcript scanning, scenario analysis and client-ready reports, with unlimited users.
  • Premium Tax: $1,499 for 30 households up to $15,499. Adds state tax scenarios, multi-year Roth conversion projections, tax-preparer letters, a client upload link and CFP CE credits.

An insurance module (home, auto and umbrella declarations) is available. Estate planning is on a waitlist. There's a 7-day free trial and discounts for NAPFA, ACP, Garrett and other network members (Holistiplan pricing).

Market position: a 2026 T3/Inside Information survey named Holistiplan the market-share leader in advisor tax software, ahead of Tax Status and FP Alpha (InvestmentNews). Kitces reports a 9.1 satisfaction rating, but notes a late-2024 price restructuring that "nearly doubled" its cost, which opened the door to competitors (Kitces).

2. FP Alpha: best for tax, estate and insurance together

Price (billed annually):

  • All-In-One: $1,995 for 55 "Snapshots" (35 tax, 10 estate, 10 insurance)
  • Tax only: $1,125 for 75 credits, up to $9,750 for 750
  • Estate: $1,790 for 10 credits and up
  • Insurance: $870 for 30 credits and up

Each tax return or household estate review uses one credit. Annual credits reload each year, purchased credits don't expire, and state tax and estate analysis are included (FP Alpha pricing).

AI: FP Alpha's AI reads wills and trusts and turns them into visual flowcharts, flags coverage gaps in home, auto and umbrella policies, and scans tax returns for missed opportunities. In September 2026 it added Scenario Insights and a Tax Projector Agent, an AI chat that models future decisions (Roth conversions, selling a home, income changes, moving states). FP Alpha said there's currently no extra cost for the AI features, but pricing "remains fluid" because it depends on the underlying AI providers (InvestmentNews).

Watch for: the credit model. Estimate how many returns and estate documents you'll review in a year.

3. RightCapital: best if you already plan in RightCapital

Price: Basic $149.95, Premium $209.95 and Platinum $254.95 per advisor per month, with an annual commitment in the first year and a 14-day free trial. Tax Analyzer is included in Premium and Platinum (RightCapital pricing).

Kitces describes Tax Analyzer as geared more toward quickly setting up future planning scenarios than detailed summaries of prior-year returns, and notes there's no separate charge beyond the Premium plan (Kitces).

Best for: advisors already paying for RightCapital Premium who want "good enough" tax analysis without another subscription.

Compliance notes for AI tax tools

  • Client tax returns are sensitive data. Check each vendor's security posture (Holistiplan cites SOC 2 Type II and MFA) and your obligations under Regulation S-P.
  • AI-generated client letters and reports are communications. Review them under your firm's policies (AI marketing and communications rules).
  • Tax advice boundaries: these tools help advisors plan. Coordinate with the client's CPA before acting.
