Short answer: TherapyNotes is the safer choice for most solo and group practices that bill insurance. It has cheaper claims (14¢), 24/7 phone support, an outstanding reputation (4.9 from 3,200+ Trustpilot reviews) and an AI suite, TherapyFuel, at $40 per clinician per month. SimplePractice has the lower entry price ($49 a month), a broader AI toolset (Note Taker and Care Aide) and a client-facing marketplace, but its recent reviews are weak on support and billing changes.

AI features compared

TherapyFuel (TherapyNotes) drafts progress notes from its Scribe or a session summary, and also drafts treatment plans. It summarizes client history forms, writes contact notes from secure messages, polishes tone, offers dictation, and pulls policy details from uploaded insurance cards. TherapyNotes says 1 in 3 progress notes on its platform are now generated by TherapyFuel, and reports 40% average time saved (vendor figures). It's HITRUST AI security certified, covered by the standard BAA, and TherapyNotes says data is "not used to train outside AI models" (TherapyFuel).

Note Taker (SimplePractice) transcribes sessions live and drafts notes that match your last note's style for each client. It works for couples and group appointments, records up to 4 hours of telehealth, and is powered by Claude by Anthropic. Transcripts stay available for up to 7 days or until you sign the note. From June 17, 2026, SimplePractice may keep de-identified, de-coupled transcripts to improve its AI, and you can manage that at the clinician, client or session level. SimplePractice offers a matching AI consent form (Note Taker FAQs).

The difference that matters: if you don't want any de-identified transcripts retained, change SimplePractice's retention setting before you start. Either way, update your AI consent form to match how your tool handles data.
