Short answer: Dext is the strongest all-rounder: the best reviews by far (4.8 from nearly 2,000 Trustpilot reviews), a partner plan built for firms, and add-ons for line items and bank statements. AutoEntry is the cheapest for low or uneven volumes, with pay-per-credit plans from $13 a month. Hubdoc is a basic $12-a-month option, but if your clients use Xero, check its free built-in Smart Document Capture first. You may not need a separate tool at all.

First: do you need a separate tool?

Xero now promotes its own Smart Document Capture on every US plan: Early ($27/month), Growing ($59) and Established ($97). Its FAQ says you can use it "for free, whatever your small business pricing plan." It extracts amounts and dates from receipts, bills and invoices, matches them to bank transactions and flags duplicates (Xero US).

If a client's needs are simple receipts and bills in Xero, start there. A dedicated tool earns its cost when you need line items, bank-statement extraction, supplier statements, multi-client workflows or QuickBooks support.

1. Dext: best overall and best for firms

Price for a business: one plan with a slider. The base is $25.21 a month billed annually ($302.50 a year) for 250 documents a month and 5 users, covering capture, extraction, storage and accounting integration. Add-ons are priced separately:

  • Line item extraction: from $20.50/month, or $0.50 a document
  • Bank statement extraction: from $13/month, or $0.32 a document
  • Supplier statement extraction: from $20.50/month
  • AI Assist: $10.50/month (an introductory price until January 31, 2027)

If you go over your allowance, documents still upload but aren't extracted until the next billing date or an upgrade. Annual plans need 30 days' notice before renewal (Dext pricing).

For firms: Dext's Essentials and Advanced partner plans are priced per client per month, with a 10-client minimum. Advanced adds team, location and workflow tools and practice insights. The public page doesn't show per-client prices, so you'll need a quote (Dext partner pricing).

What users say: 4.8 from 1,983 reviews, 81% five-star, and Dext replies to every negative review (Trustpilot). Recent reviewers praise fast, human support and time saved on bookkeeping. Minor complaints mention app updates and login codes.

Watch for: the base price rarely covers everything. Adding the entry line-item ($20.50) and bank-statement ($13) add-ons takes the base plan from $25.21 to about $58.71 a month, more than double the headline price.

2. AutoEntry: best for low or uneven volume

Price: credit plans from Bronze, $13 for 50 credits, through Silver ($24/100), Gold ($46/200) and Platinum ($103/500) up to Sapphire, $469 for 2,500 credits. A receipt or invoice costs 1 credit, an invoice with line items 2, a supplier statement 2, and a bank statement 3 per page. Unused credits roll over for 90 days, you can pause or downgrade any time, and overage of up to 200% is billed on your next invoice (AutoEntry pricing).

Every plan includes unlimited users, clients and storage, so a small firm can share one credit pool across clients. That's a real advantage over per-client pricing.

What users say: 3.3 from 764 reviews, but only 5 in the past year, and AutoEntry hasn't been replying to negative reviews. Recent complaints (2025–2026) report extraction errors (wrong suppliers, tax codes and invoice numbers), a mobile login problem, slow processing and credits charged for accidental uploads (Trustpilot). Older reviews praise how it remembers supplier codes.

Watch for: review the extracted data before publishing, and set up supplier rules early.

3. Hubdoc: cheapest basic capture

Price: $12 a month after a 30-day free trial with no card. That covers extraction from bills, statements, invoices and receipts; capture by photo, upload, email or scanner; sync with Xero, QuickBooks Online and Box; and "unlimited usage" (Hubdoc pricing).

Hubdoc doesn't extract line items, and its small Trustpilot profile (2.1 from 18 reviews, unclaimed) mentions login failures, a confusing app and VAT handling problems (Trustpilot). Xero, which owns Hubdoc, now promotes its built-in Smart Document Capture on its US Hubdoc page, which suggests where its investment is going.

FAQ

Is Dext better than Hubdoc?

For most firms, yes. Dext has line-item and bank-statement extraction, partner plans and far stronger reviews. Hubdoc is cheaper but basic.

Is Hubdoc free with Xero?

Xero's US plan page now lists its own Smart Document Capture as free on every plan, and that covers basic receipt and bill capture. Hubdoc itself is listed at $12 a month standalone. Check your Xero billing for your region.

Between about $0.19 and $0.26 per credit, depending on plan. A receipt is 1 credit, so roughly 19–26¢ each. Bank statements cost 3 credits per page.
