Short answer: for most bookkeeping practices, Dext is still the safest first AI tool. It takes receipts, bills and statements off your plate, and it has the deepest user track record of anything here. If you want AI doing the categorization and reconciliation itself, Booke AI sits on top of QuickBooks or Xero for $129 per business per month. For a client-portal-plus-practice-management setup with AI built in, look at Double.

One deadline matters more than any feature list: Intuit says QuickBooks Online Accountant is being retired on December 31, 2026, and firms are being moved to Intuit Accountant Suite (Intuit). If your practice runs on QBOA, plan that move before you add new tools.

Prices checked October 13, 2026 on each vendor's site. Dext doesn't show per-client rates in text we could read; a third-party price tracker lists Practice Essentials at about $17.70 per client per month and Advanced at $19.20, with a 10-client minimum and annual commitment (CostBench). Confirm with Dext before you budget.

1. Dext: best for document capture

What you get: receipt, bill and statement capture with data extraction, supplier rules, approvals and publishing into your ledger. Practice plans come in Essentials and Advanced, both priced per client. Advanced adds workflows, team management and practice-level insights. Both have a 14-day free trial (Dext help center).

What users say: Dext has the strongest public track record in this category: 4.8 out of 5 from about 1,980 Trustpilot reviews, 188 of them in the last year (Trustpilot). Reviewers consistently mention fast capture, time saved on manual entry and helpful support. The complaints are minor and scattered: login code issues and waiting on app updates.

Strengths

  • Proven at scale, with years of reviews
  • Works alongside whatever ledger your clients use
  • Free trial for practices

Watch out for

  • Annual commitment and a 10-client minimum, per third-party pricing data
  • It captures documents; it doesn't do the bookkeeping judgment for you

2. Booke AI: best AI bookkeeper add-on

Price: $129 per business per month on the business plan, prorated when you add a client mid-month. Accounting firms get custom pricing, multi-client management and a white-label client experience (Booke AI pricing).

Booke works on top of QuickBooks or Xero rather than replacing them. It runs daily bank-feed categorization, matches documents to transactions, requests missing documents from clients, and keeps an audit trail of exceptions for you to review. It suits firms whose bottleneck is the monthly categorize-and-reconcile cycle, not data capture.

We found too few independent reviews to report a reliable user verdict. At $129 per business, trial it on two or three messy clients and compare the hours saved before you roll it out.

3. Digits: best AI-native ledger

Price: Essentials $65/mo, Core $100/mo (most popular) and Pro $250/mo, per business, with a 30-day free trial. Every plan includes 24/7 AI bookkeeping and reconciliation. Firms get partner-only plans and volume discounts through Digits' accounting partner program, and can try it on their own books free. Digits is available only to U.S. entities (Digits pricing).

Digits isn't an add-on. It replaces QuickBooks or Xero as the general ledger. That's a big move for existing clients, but a clean option for new clients or businesses already planning to switch, especially with QuickBooks Online Accountant retiring. Note that some Pro features are marked "coming soon," and custom reports below Pro are only available through a firm partner.

4. Double: best practice platform with AI

Price: per connected client (any client whose QuickBooks Online or Xero file is linked), with unlimited users. Team members and unconnected clients are free. A Tax Suite add-on is included with a $200/month annual commitment (Double pricing).

Double combines a client portal (passwordless login), month-end close tracking, file review, AI bank feeds and transaction categorization, receipts, 1099 management and an "Ask Double" assistant. It suits firms that want one workspace for close, client requests and review, rather than stitching together several apps. The per-client rate isn't published, and the free trial only comes after a demo.

Which should you choose?

If your firm... Choose
Still keys in receipts and bills Dext
Spends most of its hours categorizing and reconciling Booke AI
Is onboarding new U.S. clients or moving off QBOA Digits
Wants client requests, close and review in one place Double

Before you connect any AI tool to client books: check the vendor's security terms, add it to your written information security plan, and get client consent where tax return information is involved. What the IRS and FTC rules require.

FAQ

Can AI do bookkeeping on its own?

Not reliably unsupervised. Tools like Booke AI and Digits automate categorization and reconciliation, but they're built around a human reviewing exceptions, and you remain responsible for the books.

What happens to QuickBooks Online Accountant?

Intuit says QBOA will be retired on December 31, 2026, with firms moving to Intuit Accountant Suite, and that no data migration is needed.

Is Dext worth it for a small practice?

For most practices, yes, as long as you'll use it across at least the minimum number of clients. Its user feedback is the strongest in this category.
