AI Therapy Notes Cost Calculator: Upheal vs Mentalyc vs SimplePractice vs TherapyNotes
Prices and facts checked October 14, 2026. We don't accept payment for rankings.

On this page
How to use it: enter how many sessions you see in a typical week, and tick the box if you see couples or families. The calculator converts that into notes a month, picks the plan that fits for each tool, and shows the monthly cost and the cost per note.
Notes a month are estimated as sessions a week × 52 ÷ 12. SimplePractice and TherapyNotes add-ons only work inside those EHRs, so add your EHR plan to compare fairly if you'd be switching.

How to read the results
- Light caseloads favor Mentalyc. Under about 100 notes a month, its Basic plan costs less than Upheal's flat $39.
- Full caseloads favor Upheal's unlimited plan, unless you need Mentalyc's extras: automatic CPT codes, supervision notes or group notes.
- If you already use an EHR, its built-in add-on avoids running a second system and copying notes across. Compare SimplePractice and TherapyNotes in our EHR comparison.
- Cost per note is the fairest way to compare. A cheaper plan you outgrow mid-month costs more in the end.
Example: a therapist seeing 22 clients a week
At 22 sessions a week, you write about 95 notes a month:
- Mentalyc Basic (100 notes, annual billing): $29.99, about $0.32 per note
- Upheal AI Notes: $39, about $0.41 per note, with room to grow
- SimplePractice Note Taker: $35 on top of your SimplePractice plan
- TherapyNotes TherapyFuel: $40 on top of your TherapyNotes plan
If you also see couples or families, Mentalyc moves you up to Pro ($59.99, about $0.63 per note), and Upheal becomes the cheaper choice. Add a few more clients a week and you'd pass Mentalyc Basic's 100-note limit, so leave some headroom when you pick a plan.
Cost isn't the only thing to check
Before recording any session, make sure:
- The vendor signs a BAA. Upheal and Mentalyc both state that every account is covered. SimplePractice and TherapyNotes cover their AI under their existing BAAs.
- You know what happens to audio and transcripts. SimplePractice, for example, may keep de-identified transcripts from June 17, 2026 unless you change the setting (Note Taker FAQs).
- You have written client consent where your state requires it. Use our free AI notes consent form template and see the state AI scribe consent laws.
