What happened: in September 2026, Anthropic announced Claude for Financial Advisors, a plugin with pre-built advisor workflows and connectors to tools like Orion, Wealthbox, Addepar and MoneyGuidePro. Altruist's Hazel launched an AI financial planning agent in October, and RightCapital debuted its Iris planning agent in June (Kitces, Oct 2026). Meanwhile, a September survey found 72% of advisors now use AI, up from 56% a year earlier (BNP Paribas Cardif).

Why it matters today: the market is moving from AI that writes notes to AI agents that pull data across your tech stack and take multistep actions. Those agents cost more, touch more client data and raise new supervision questions.

Disclosure: Claude is made by Anthropic. We have no commercial relationship with any vendor in this article.

Where advisors are with AI

Survey Finding
BNP Paribas Cardif (Sep 22, 2026) 72% of advisors use AI; 61% call regulation a central issue; 72% feel more exposed to cyber threats
Cerulli / Vista Equity (Sep 8, 2026, 68 firms, ~$1.2T AUM) Only 12% of firms are AI "leaders"; AI spend per employee projected to rise from $1,243 to $2,586; leaders train staff (75%) and measure savings
Betterment Advisor Solutions (Sep 10, 2026, 1,001 investors) 75% of clients use AI for money questions; only 3% would replace their advisor with it

Sources: BNP Paribas Cardif; Vista Equity Partners; Betterment (Betterment sells advisor technology).

The takeaway: what separates leaders isn't budget. It's governance: a named owner, an acceptable-use policy, training and measurement (Vista).

The real cost question

Kitces' caution: it's not yet clear time savings or new revenue will cover these costs, especially token-based usage fees that are hard to predict (Kitces). Do the math per advisor: if an agent saves 3 hours a week and you'd fill that time with client work, what's it worth at your effective hourly rate?

Industry observers also warn that many vendors overuse the word "agent". A true agent senses, reasons, acts and remembers; tools that do only some of those "set expectations [they] can't meet" (Wealth Management).

Compliance checklist for AI agents

  1. Enterprise accounts only. Kitces warns that staff building tools on personal ChatGPT or Claude accounts can expose client data; use licenses that don't train on firm data.
  2. Archive prompts and outputs that feed client communications or records (our recordkeeping guide).
  3. Vendor due diligence under Reg S-P: each connector moves client data (our Reg S-P guide).
  4. Humans approve actions: rebalances, trades and client messages.
  5. Don't overstate it in marketing. "AI-powered planning" claims must be accurate (AI washing rules).

FAQ

Do I need an agent if I already have an AI notetaker?

Not necessarily. Notetakers cover the most time-consuming task. Agents add value when you have several systems to pull data from.

Can a solo advisor buy Claude for Financial Advisors?

Kitces reports a 20-seat minimum on the Enterprise tier, which makes it expensive for solos. Check current terms with Anthropic.

Will AI planning agents replace eMoney or MoneyGuidePro?

Not soon. Kitces notes advisors have historically resisted trading plan depth for speed.
