What happened: on October 6, 2026, investing app M1 launched M1 Advisor, an AI financial advisor delivered through its SEC-registered RIA, M1 Advisory Services. No human advisors are involved in individual advice. There's no advisory fee through 2027, and no minimum (InvestmentNews; WealthManagement.com).
Why it matters: it's one of the first registered advisers offering fiduciary advice from AI alone, aimed squarely at people below most advisors' minimums. M1's CEO put the pitch bluntly: "Minimums exist because human time is expensive" (InvestmentNews).
How M1 Advisor works

| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Who gives the advice | AI, through M1 Advisory Services LLC, an SEC-registered RIA operating under the internet adviser exemption |
| Humans involved? | The Form ADV lists 14 employees, none in investment advisory roles. No one reviews individual accounts. |
| Fiduciary? | Yes, as an SEC-registered adviser. It is not an ERISA fiduciary, and rollover information is educational only. |
| Price | No advisory fee through 2027. A separate $3/month platform fee applies, waived at $10,000+ in assets. Long-term pricing isn't settled. |
| Minimum | None |
| What it sees | Live M1 account data (positions, cost basis, cash), plus outside accounts like 401(k)s, IRAs, mortgages and loans via Plaid |
| What it can't do | Place trades or move money. Clients act on its recommendations themselves. |
| AI models | Third-party models from Google, OpenAI, Anthropic and Amazon, under an internal governance process |
| Scale | M1's homepage cites 400,000+ clients and $14 billion+ in client assets as of September 2026. The RIA reports $1.85 billion in assets under management. |
Sources: InvestmentNews; WealthManagement.com; M1. M1 also says clients can cancel the advisory agreement at any time without penalty.
M1's own disclosure warns that AI can produce plausible but incorrect information and tells clients to verify material facts. On accountability, its CEO said: "We're the fiduciary, whichever model is underneath."
What M1 Advisor is, and isn't
What it is: a no-minimum, always-on adviser for people in their 30s and 40s with good incomes and savings who sit below private wealth managers' thresholds, per M1. That's the "mass affluent" segment many advisors turn away.
What it isn't: a full financial planner. It doesn't execute trades, doesn't advise on employer plans as an ERISA fiduciary, and has no human to call when life gets complicated, like a death, a divorce, a business sale or a bad market.
The rest of the industry is adding AI, not removing advisors
M1 is the outlier. Most of this fall's AI launches augment human advisors:
- Anthropic's Claude for Financial Advisors (September) plugs into tools like Wealthbox, Orion, MoneyGuidePro and Zocks. Kitces estimates it costs roughly $5,500–$6,500 a year for a solo advisor.
- Altruist's Hazel added an AI financial planning agent in October, with deterministic calculators doing the planning math.
- RightCapital launched its Iris AI planning agent in June.
Adoption is climbing. Schwab's RIA and AI study found 63% of RIAs now use AI tools in some way, more than double the 2023 level, mostly for notetaking and email drafting. But only about 1 in 10 AI users are fully integrating it into their business (Schwab).
What it means for human advisors
- The low end is getting automated. If your value is portfolio allocation and rebalancing for small accounts, free AI advice is now direct competition.
- Complexity and behavior stay human. Taxes, estates, business owners, and keeping clients invested through volatility are where an AI-only model is weakest.
- Use AI to lower your own minimums. AI notetakers, planning agents and CRM assistants let advisors serve smaller clients profitably (best AI notetakers for advisors; AI tax planning tools).
- Watch the compliance questions. An AI-only adviser is a live test of how the SEC treats AI advice, supervision and recordkeeping (SEC 2026 exam priorities).
The government's outlook has already shifted. BLS cut its 2025–2035 growth projection for personal financial advisors to 1%, citing AI tools that "may moderate demand" (will AI replace financial advisors?).
FAQ
Is M1 Advisor a real fiduciary?
M1 Advisory Services is an SEC-registered investment adviser, so it owes a fiduciary duty for its advice. It is not an ERISA fiduciary, and it describes rollover information as educational only.
How much does M1 Advisor cost?
No advisory fee through 2027. A $3 monthly platform fee applies, waived for clients with $10,000 or more at M1. Pricing after 2027 isn't set.
Will AI replace financial advisors?
Not entirely, but it's slowing growth. BLS now projects just 1% growth for personal financial advisors through 2035, and AI-only services like M1's are targeting smaller clients.
