Short answer: for remodelers and small residential contractors, Handoff is the most complete AI estimator. It builds estimates from a site walkthrough or a voice note, from $119 a month billed annually. Buildxact suits builders who want estimating tied to job management, and its free Go plan is the cheapest way to try AI estimating. If you price from architects' plans every week, a dedicated takeoff tool like Kreo or Togal.AI will measure faster, but neither prices the job for you.

Two kinds of "AI estimating"
Before comparing prices, know which problem you're solving:
- AI estimate generators (Handoff, Buildxact's Blu) turn a scope (a walkthrough, notes or plans) into a priced estimate using your labor rates and material costs.
- AI takeoff tools (Togal.AI, Kreo) measure quantities from drawings: areas, lengths, counts. Pricing happens somewhere else.
An independent September 2026 comparison sums up takeoff tools as "quantities only; pricing happens elsewhere" (Sagnik Bhattacharya). Most trades and remodelers need the first kind. Estimators working from PDFs every day need the second.

1. Handoff: best AI estimator for remodelers

Price (annual billing):
- Flex $119/month: 2 users, 50 AI credits a month, 7-day free trial
- Pro $239/month: 5 users, unlimited AI, AI site walkthroughs, client financing and an AI project-management suite. 12-month commitment.
- Scale $719/month: adds AI takeoffs from plans up to 7,000 sq ft, a subcontractor portal and API access. 12-month commitment.
Annual billing saves 20% (Handoff pricing).
Handoff's pitch is that it does the estimating rather than speeding up your measuring. It works from your own pricing catalog (labor rates, material price books, markups) and falls back on its own averages only where you have none. That's why the independent review advises: "load your catalogue before you judge the output" (Sagnik Bhattacharya). Handoff's accuracy claims are its own, not independently measured.
Watch for: Pro and Scale need a 12-month commitment, so use the Flex trial to re-price a job you've already completed before signing up.
2. Buildxact: best estimating plus job management
Price: Go is free and includes 5 credits for AI estimates and proposals. Foundation $199/month (unlimited users, digital takeoffs, Blu Assembly Assistant), Pro $399/month (adds Blu Estimate Generator, job management and schedules) and Master $599/month (all Blu AI tools). Annual billing saves 15% (Buildxact pricing).
Buildxact's AI, called Blu, comes in four parts: a Takeoff Assistant, an Estimate Reviewer that flags missed items, an Assembly Assistant and an Estimate Generator. They're split across tiers. On Foundation, the Estimate Generator is +$99/month. On Pro, the Takeoff Assistant is +$99 and the Estimate Reviewer +$149. Only Master includes everything. The independent review warns of "cost creep" if you need generation, takeoff and review together.
Watch for: Pro plus both add-ons ($647/month) costs more than Master ($599). If you want all of Blu, go straight to Master.
3. Kreo: best value AI takeoff
Price: billed annually per user. Essential $100/month (manual takeoff only, no AI), Pro $175/month for 1–4 users with the AI features, Business $250/month (5–20 users, sold as 5 seats for $15,000 a year). There's a 7-day free trial on each plan and a 7-day money-back guarantee (Kreo pricing).
Kreo Pro includes AI takeoff for rooms, walls, doors and windows, one-click area and line measurements, auto symbol counting, AI scale detection, batch takeoff across sheets, and an AI assistant called Caddie. Auto Measure isn't billed per use inside the app.
Watch for: the AI tools are on Pro and above only. Essential is a manual takeoff tool.
4. Togal.AI: best for high-volume plan takeoffs
Price: Growth $299 per user per month, billed yearly, with unlimited automated takeoffs, chat prompts and symbol searches. Business pricing is custom for 4+ users. The pricing page doesn't mention a free trial; the "Try Now" button leads to a demo (Togal.AI pricing).
At about $3,600 a year per estimator, Togal is built for estimators who take off from architects' PDFs every week. The independent review calls it hard to justify for occasional drawings, and notes that poor scans or scale errors can produce confident but wrong areas.
Which should you choose?
| If you… | Choose |
|---|---|
| Remodel kitchens, baths or whole homes and price from site visits | Handoff |
| Want estimating, scheduling and job costing in one system | Buildxact |
| Want to try AI estimating for free | Buildxact Go |
| Measure plans often on a budget | Kreo Pro |
| Do takeoffs from PDFs every day | Togal.AI |
| Run a service trade (HVAC, plumbing) with flat-rate price books | Your field-service software's quoting; see Jobber vs Housecall Pro |
Before you buy, whichever tool you pick:
- Re-price a finished job. Upload your real rates and compare the result with what you actually charged.
- Check the commitment. Several of these plans are annual-only.
- Make sure you can export your price book and estimates if you leave.
- Review every AI estimate before it goes to a client. You're responsible for the number, not the software.

FAQ
Can AI estimate a remodel accurately?
It can produce a fast first draft, but accuracy depends on your own rates and a complete scope. Vendors' accuracy claims aren't independently verified, so test with a completed job.
What's the difference between takeoff and estimating software?
Takeoff measures quantities from drawings. Estimating applies prices, labor and markup to those quantities. Some tools (Handoff Scale, Buildxact) do both.
Is there free AI estimating software?
Buildxact's Go plan is free with 5 credits. General chatbots like ChatGPT can help draft scopes and catch missed items, but they can't hold your live price book or measure drawings reliably.
